If You Dream About Being a Writer, Then Write!

Have you ever dreamed of writing your own book? If so, how much of your book have you gotten done so far? What? You never got started? It’s a noble dream to write your own book but if you don’t take steps towards actually writing said book, how can you expect your dream to come true? Millions of people dream about becoming writers, but very few ever succeed. Why is that? It is not because it is an impossible dream. It is simply because many people never even get started.

Sometimes people have not started writing because they aren’t sure which form of writing they are good at. Maybe they are afraid because they never did it before. Or perhaps people are afraid others will reject them. Whether by not having enough time, being too tired, not being motivated enough, or some other reason, you can’t become a writer unless you get started. Even if you pick one random form right now, you can always choose a different style later.

What kind of writer are you? Have you experimented in all forms of writing? If you have, you may have discovered a passion for a different kind of writing than originally intended. Several types of writing include novels, short stories, poems, copywriting, article writing, advertisements, screenplays and salescopy. There are definitely even more types lurking out there if you’re willing to look for them. Sometimes it helps your creative muscles when you’re in a funk to get out there and purposely write something you’re not used to. Instead of staying inside your comfort zone, go outside and purposely do something different. If you keep doing the same thing over and over and expecting the same results, you are probably a fool. Once you have chosen a form of writing and played with it for a few weeks, then you may move on to the next type.

As you write, think about your motivations. Here are a few questions to ask yourself as you are writing. Why are you writing? What is your purpose as a novelist? Do you write because you are passionate about the subject or because of other reasons? Do you write because an urge lingers in the back of your mind, prodding you everyday? Do you want other people to acknowledge how talented you are? Do you want to be famous for your work? Do you want to become rich from writing famous novels? If you want to be a writer, you have to have a goal and remind yourself everyday of the reason why you write. A writer needs a strong motivation to keep going, or they will likely never reach success.
